Blears: hires comms chief

David Singleton 17-Oct-08

The Department for Communities and Local Government has hired former BBC News correspondent George Eykyn to oversee its comms operation.

He will join the department, headed by secretary of state Hazel Blears, in December as communications director.

Eykyn is currently a senior consultant at PricewaterhouseCoopers, which he joined in 2004.

Prior to this he worked as a journalist and presenter across all outlets of BBC News. He covered the wars in the former Yugoslavia and was also a regular news presenter on BBC World TV News, News 24 and Radio 5 Live.

At the DCLG, he will lead the team responsible for developing and implementing wide-ranging campaigns across housing, community cohesion, Fire and Rescue, local government and planning policy.

Eykyn said: ‘Communities and Local Government works at the heart of the big issues facing our country, from cohesion and tackling deprivation to green housing and active citizenship.

‘I am delighted to be joining Communities and Local Government at a time when it has created a new framework for local government, empowering local people, and set out practical plans to provide the new green homes Britain needs.’
